# Eric Milnes

**Eric Milnes** (born May 7, 1959) is an American [harpsichordist](/source/Harpsichordist), organist and conductor, especially in the field of [Baroque music](/source/Baroque_music). He began a series of recordings of all [Bach cantatas](/source/Bach_cantata) with singers performing [one voice per part](/source/OVPP) and the [Montreal Baroque Orchestra](/source/Montreal_Baroque_Orchestra).

## Career

Born in [Huntington, New York](/source/Huntington,_New_York), Milnes studied in New York City at [Columbia College](/source/Columbia_College_(New_York)), [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University) and the [Juilliard School of Music](/source/Juilliard_School_of_Music). He made several recordings as instrumentalist and conductor of vocal music, conducting from the keyboard instrument in Baroque practice.[1] He has appeared at international festivals in the United States, Canada and Europe.[2]

He recorded settings by [Salamone Rossi](/source/Salamone_Rossi), a Jewish composer at the court of the [Duke of Mantua](/source/Duke_of_Mantua), of texts in Hebrew from the [Song of Songs](/source/Song_of_Songs) in 2012, with [New York Baroque](/source/New_York_Baroque), an ensemble of eight singers with continuo. A reviewer noted the performances evoked a certain "flavour of secrecy", fitting music that was "underground" at the time of creation, with little variation in dynamic and tempo.[3]

A reviewer noted his recordings of four [Bach cantatas](/source/Bach_cantata) with singers in [OVPP](/source/OVPP) fashion and the [Montreal Baroque Orchestra](/source/Montreal_Baroque_Orchestra), as part of a planned cycle of the works,[4] induced "animated, stylistically assured playing" with "a sure feel for tempo and Bachian rhetoric".[5] Another part of the series, called *Cantatas for Mary*, and presenting [*Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben*, BWV 147](/source/Herz_und_Mund_und_Tat_und_Leben,_BWV_147), [*Ich habe genug*, BWV 82](/source/Ich_habe_genug,_BWV_82), and [*Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern*, BWV 1](/source/Wie_sch%C3%B6n_leuchtet_der_Morgenstern,_BWV_1), was reviewed as enlightening, with soloists "whose stylish, energetic singing is a pure joy to hear" and an orchestra with warm, articulate strings and brilliantly resonant trumpet and horns."[6]
