==Playing career==
Before turning professional, Hartzell attended [Quinnipiac University](/source/Quinnipiac_University), where he played four seasons of [NCAA Men's Division I Ice Hockey](/source/NCAA_Men's_Division_I_Ice_Hockey) with the [Quinnipiac Bobcats men's ice hockey](/source/Quinnipiac_Bobcats_men's_ice_hockey) team. After his contract with the Penguins, Hartzell was not tendered a new deal and was released to free agency.
