Born in Winchester on 27 November 1927 to the son of [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force) [Wing Commander](/source/Wing_Commander_(rank)) he was educated at [Bridlington School](/source/Bridlington_School), [East Riding of Yorkshire](/source/East_Riding_of_Yorkshire), and joined the [RAF](/source/RAF) as an aircraft [apprentice](/source/apprentice) in February 1944.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/2455701/Air-Marshal-Sir-Eric-Dunn.html|title = Air Marshal Sir Eric Dunn}}</ref>

Following three years at No 1 Radio School at [RAF Cranwell](/source/RAF_Cranwell), Dunn graduated in second place as a radio fitter (air). At this point, he missed his first opportunity for an RAF [commission](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)), being very unlucky not to be selected for a cadetship. Dunn won his colours every year in [rugby](/source/Rugby_union) and [cricket](/source/cricket), excelling to win the [Victor Ludorum](/source/Victor_Ludorum) shield for outstanding sportsmanship.

Dunn was soon posted to Hong Kong to work on the [flying boats](/source/Short_Sunderland), where Dunn volunteered for many missions during the [Korean War](/source/Korean_War). Dunn was an essential member for the crew in many of the missions as they lasted so long – some up to eighteen hours, and Dunn was responsible for the maintenance of the on-board navigation, electrical and radio equipment. Due to his efforts Dunn, then a [corporal](/source/corporal), was award the [British Empire Medal](/source/British_Empire_Medal) (BEM).

After returning to England in 1951, Dunn was selected for a [commission](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) within the [engineering](/source/engineering) branch of the [RAF](/source/Royal_Air_Force).

Dunn retired in July 1986 and for four years was a director at [Deutsch](/source/Deutsch_(Interconnect_Solutions)) (then, Hellerman Deutsch).<ref>{{cite web |title=Air Marshal Sir Eric Dunn |website=[The Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph) |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220407203732/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/2455701/Air-Marshal-Sir-Eric-Dunn.html |archive-date=2022-04-07 |url-status=live |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/2455701/Air-Marshal-Sir-Eric-Dunn.html}}</ref>

Dunn died on 16 July 2008 aged 80, leaving his wife and three daughters.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article4708223.ece |title=Air Marshal Sir Eric Dunn: RAF Chief Engineer |access-date=16 December 2008 |archive-date=23 May 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100523062859/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article4708223.ece |url-status=dead }}</ref>
