# Eric Bergren

**Eric Lee Bergren** (April 27, 1954[1] – July 14, 2016) was an American [screenwriter](/source/Screenwriter).

## Early life and career

Bergren was born 1954 in [Pasadena, California](/source/Pasadena,_California). He studied theatre arts at the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California).[2]

Based on works of [Frederick Treves](/source/Sir_Frederick_Treves,_1st_Baronet) and [Ashley Montagu](/source/Ashley_Montagu) about [Joseph Merrick](/source/Joseph_Merrick), Bergren wrote the script for the 1980 film *[The Elephant Man](/source/The_Elephant_Man_(1980_film))* together with director [David Lynch](/source/David_Lynch) and fellow screenwriter [Christopher De Vore](/source/Christopher_De_Vore). At the [53rd Academy Awards](/source/53rd_Academy_Awards), Bergren, Lynch and De Vore were nominated for an [Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Adapted_Screenplay). It was also nominated for the [Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay](/source/Golden_Globe_Award_for_Best_Screenplay), the [BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay](/source/BAFTA_Award_for_Best_Screenplay) and the [Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay](/source/Writers_Guild_of_America_Award_for_Best_Adapted_Screenplay).

Together with Christopher De Vore and [Nicholas Kazan](/source/Nicholas_Kazan), Bergren also wrote the script for *[Frances](/source/Frances_(film))*, a biopic about American actress and television host [Frances Farmer](/source/Frances_Farmer).

In 1988, he directed the short film *...They Haven't Seen This...*, based on his own script.

## Death

Bergren died on July 14, 2016, aged 62, in Pasadena due to complications from [stage 4](/source/Cancer_staging) [liver cancer](/source/Liver_cancer), which had been diagnosed a few months earlier.[2] He was survived by his ex-wife, Sheila Condit, and two daughters Erin Condit-Bergren and Elysse Condit.[2]
