The surrounding area has a rugged geology and topography with evergreen wooded areas and large olive groves. It is dominated by Mt Dindymus (782m). Erdek district also included the islands of [Koyun](/source/Koyun_Island) and [Paşalimanı](/source/Pa%C5%9Faliman%C4%B1).

In the summer ferries travel from Erdek to [Avşa Adası](/source/Av%C5%9Fa), one of the [Marmara Islands](/source/Marmara_Island) in the Sea of Marmara. During the [Ottoman period](/source/Ottoman_Empire), Erdek was the centre of the [Sanjak of Karasi](/source/Sanjak_of_Karasi). In the 1960s, before [Bodrum](/source/Bodrum) and [Marmaris](/source/Marmaris) became popular vacation spots, Erdek was a fashionable holiday resort for Istanbul residents.
