Ancient Athenian deme

**Epicephisia** or **Epikephisia** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Ἐπικηφισία) was a [deme](/source/Deme) of [ancient Attica](/source/Ancient_Attica) in the *[phyle](/source/Phyle)* of [Oeneis](/source/Oeneis).[1]

The deme was small and unimportant, providing only one or two *[Bouleutai](/source/Bouleutai)* to the Athenian Boule.[2] However it housed a branch of the Salaminae family, originating from [Salamis](/source/Salamis_Island). This aristocratic clan was based on a sacred alliance and presided over some of the oldest cults of [Athens](/source/Athens), such as those of [Athena](/source/Athena), [Aglaurus](/source/Aglaurus%2C_daughter_of_Cecrops), and [Pandrosus](/source/Pandrosus).

Another noble family of Epicephisia were the Aphidantidae, who claimed to descend from [Apheidas](/source/Apheidas), king of Athens and great-grandson of [Theseus](/source/Theseus).

Epicephisia also had its own [dikasterion](/source/Dikasterion), a court of justice, and its own legal officers.

The site of Epicephisia is located in the Kephisos valley, west of modern Athens.[3][4]
