The courthouse, which was designed by [John Keane](/source/John_B._Keane_(architect)) and [Henry Whitestone](/source/Henry_Whitestone) in the [neoclassical style](/source/Neoclassical_architecture) and built in [ashlar](/source/ashlar) stone, was completed in 1852.<ref name=boi>{{cite web|url=http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=CL&regno=20000114|title=Ennis Courthouse|publisher=Buildings of Ireland|accessdate=31 October 2019}}</ref> The design involved a symmetrical main frontage facing the junction of Gort Road and New Road; there was a flight of steps leading up to a large [hexastyle](/source/hexastyle) [portico](/source/portico) with [Ionic order](/source/Ionic_order) columns supporting an [entablature](/source/entablature) and a [modillion](/source/modillion)ed [pediment](/source/pediment).<ref name=boi/> A Russian [artillery piece](/source/artillery_piece), which had been used in the [Crimean War](/source/Crimean_War), was brought back to Ireland and placed on the lawn outside the building.<ref name=boi/> A statue of [Michael O'Loghlen](/source/Michael_O'Loghlen), former Master of Rolls in Ireland, by the sculptor [Joseph Robinson Kirk](/source/Joseph_Robinson_Kirk) was installed in the courthouse in the mid-19th century.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/oloughlin_family.htm|title=O'Loghlen Family|publisher=Clare Library|accessdate=31 October 2019}}</ref>
