Brenner was born in Vienna. He was educated in [Europe](/source/Europe), and attended [New York University](/source/New_York_University) and the [Manhattan School of Music](/source/Manhattan_School_of_Music). He played with the [Cleveland Orchestra](/source/Cleveland_Orchestra) starting in 1929. He joined the New York Philharmonic in 1932, where he played under the direction of conductors [Arturo Toscanini](/source/Arturo_Toscanini) and [Leonard Bernstein](/source/Leonard_Bernstein), among others.<ref name=NYTObit/>
