'''Emmanuel Venious''', often better known simply by his [professional name](/source/Stage_name) of '''Manol''' was a [Greek](/source/Greeks) [Ottoman](/source/Ottoman_Empire) [luthier](/source/luthier) living and working in [Beyoğlu](/source/Beyo%C4%9Flu), [Istanbul](/source/Istanbul) (then also known as [Constantinople/Kostantiniyye](/source/Names_of_Istanbul)).

He began by working as a furniture maker, before becoming a luthier. Today he is best known for developing the smaller, higher tuned version of the [Oud](/source/Oud) now commonly known as the ''Turkish oud'', commonly played in [Turkey](/source/Turkey), [Greece](/source/Greece), [Armenia](/source/Armenia), [Azerbaijan](/source/Azerbaijan) and elsewhere, compared to the more varied, lower pitched and often larger ''Arabic oud''. He also built the [lavta](/source/lavta).<ref>{{Cite web |title=Web Museum {{!}} Xilofonia |url=https://xilofonia.gr/web-museum/ |access-date=2026-02-28 |language=el}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Manol (Emmanuel Venios) - Ūd - Turkish - The Metropolitan Museum of Art |url=https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/656846 |access-date=2026-02-28 |website=www.metmuseum.org |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=MANOL EMMANUEL VENIOS (1845 – 1915) - Handmade High Quality Musical Instrument Workshop and Store - Oud, Lute, Tambour, Saz and More... |url=https://www.theorientvalley.com/manol-emmanuel-venios |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20251211001334/https://www.theorientvalley.com/manol-emmanuel-venios |archive-date=2025-12-11 |access-date=2026-02-28 |website=www.theorientvalley.com |language=en}}</ref><ref>Prichard, Laura Stanfield.
