**Emma Louise Lipman** (born 23 February 1989) is a [professional](/source/Professional_sports) [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) for [Genoa](/source/Genoa_CFC_Women) in the Italian [Serie B](/source/Serie_B_(women's_football)). Lipman was born and brought up in England but chose to play for [Malta](/source/Malta_women's_national_football_team) at international level.

## Club career

Lipman joined [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_United_L.F.C.) as a 10-year-old and was playing in their [first team](/source/Glossary_of_association_football_terms#first_team) by the time she was 14 years old.[1] After moving to [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire) to attend [Leeds Beckett University](/source/Leeds_Beckett_University), Lipman represented [Leeds City Vixens](/source/Guiseley_A.F.C._Vixens)[2] and [Leeds United](/source/Leeds_United_Women_F.C.) in the [FA Women's Premier League](/source/FA_Women's_Premier_League).

In July 2013 Lipman [transferred](/source/Transfer_(association_football)) to [Manchester City](/source/Manchester_City_W.F.C.).[3] When [Sheikh Mansour](/source/Mansour_bin_Zayed_Al_Nahyan)-backed Manchester City successfully bid for an [FA WSL](/source/FA_Women's_Super_League) [franchise](/source/Professional_sports_league_organization#Structure_of_North_American_leagues_(Franchise_and_minor_league_system)) in 2014, they handed Lipman a professional contract.

Lipman won a contract extension for Manchester City's [2015 season](/source/2015_Manchester_City_W.F.C._season), but the club's purchase of England full-backs [Lucy Bronze](/source/Lucy_Bronze) and [Demi Stokes](/source/Demi_Stokes) reduced her opportunities to play. In February 2016 she joined [Sheffield FC](/source/Sheffield_F.C._Ladies), who had just been [promoted](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) into [WSL 2](/source/FA_Women's_Championship).[4]

In 2017 Lipman accepted an offer to play in Italy, with [AGSM Verona](/source/A.S.D._AGSM_Verona_Calcio_Femminile). She featured in 21 of 22 league fixtures as the club secured a mid-table finish in [Serie A](/source/Serie_A_(women's_football)). That prompted Roma to sign Lipman for their newly formed women's team.[5] After playing in 17 of [Roma](/source/A.S._Roma_Women)'s 22 [2018–19 Serie A](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_Serie_A_(women)) games, contributing one goal, Lipman signed for another Italian club [Florentia San Gimignano](/source/Florentia_San_Gimignano_S.S.D.) in July 2019.[6]

In July 2020 Lipman and her Maltese teammate [Rachel Cuschieri](/source/Rachel_Cuschieri) signed for [Lazio](/source/S.S._Lazio_Women_2015), who had narrowly missed [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) to Serie A the previous season.[7]

## International career

As well as England, Lipman was also [eligible](/source/FIFA_eligibility_rules) for the national teams of [Scotland](/source/Scotland_women's_national_football_team) and [Malta](/source/Malta_women's_national_football_team) due to her grandparents.[8] In May 2019 Lipman received a call-up to Malta's squad for a [friendly match](/source/Exhibition_game) against [Bolton Wanderers](/source/Bolton_Wanderers_L.F.C.).[9] She started Malta's 2–1 win at the [Malta Football Association](/source/Malta_Football_Association) training grounds in [Ta' Qali](/source/Ta'_Qali).[10]

On 4 October 2019 Lipman won her first official [cap](/source/Cap_(sports)) for Malta, in a home [UEFA Women's Euro 2021 qualifying Group B](/source/UEFA_Women's_Euro_2021_qualifying_Group_B) fixture against [Italy](/source/Italy_women's_national_football_team). Although Lipman's handball conceded an injury time [penalty kick](/source/Penalty_kick), converted by [Cristiana Girelli](/source/Cristiana_Girelli), Malta received credit for their "brave display" in their 2–0 defeat against Italy.[11] Lipman retained her place in the team for the next qualifier, a 1–1 draw with [Israel](/source/Israel_women's_national_football_team).[12]
