Emma Dodd was born in 1969 in [Guildford](/source/Guildford), the daughter of designers Robert Dodd and Fay Hillier. She attended [Tormead School](/source/Tormead_School), Kingston Polytechnic, where she did a Foundation Course in Art and Design, and then [Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design](/source/Central_Saint_Martins_College_of_Art_and_Design), London graduating in [graphic design](/source/graphic_design) and [illustration](/source/illustration) in 1992.{{Citation needed|date=May 2025}}
