People described in Genesis and Deuteronomy

The [Moabite](/source/Moabite_language) name for the [Repha'im](/source/Rephaite) was the **Emites** ([/ˈɛmaɪts/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) or [/ˈiːmaɪts/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English)) or **Emim** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): אֵמִים‎ *ʾĒmīm*). They are mentioned in [Genesis 14](/source/Genesis_14):5 as having been defeated at Shaveh-kiriathaim by an invading [coalition](/source/Military_alliance) of kings led by the [Elamite](/source/Elam) King [Chedorlaomer](/source/Chedorlaomer),[1] and in the [Book of Deuteronomy](/source/Book_of_Deuteronomy), chapter 2, as having been a powerful and populous people, "as tall as the [Anakim](/source/Anakim)".[2] They were defeated by the [Moabites](/source/Moab), who occupied their land.

According to [Rashi](/source/Rashi), their name is translated as "the dreaded ones",[3] and the singular Ema/Emma (Hebrew: אימה) means "horror" or "terror". [Albert Barnes](/source/Albert_Barnes_(theologian)) states that the name was given to this people by the Moabites.[4]
