**Emily Henry** (born May 17, 1991) is an American author who is best known for her 2020s romance novels *[Beach Read](/source/Beach_Read)*, *[People We Meet on Vacation](/source/People_We_Meet_on_Vacation)*, *[Book Lovers](/source/Book_Lovers)*, *[Happy Place](/source/Happy_Place_(novel))*, *[Funny Story](/source/Funny_Story_(novel))*, and *[Great Big Beautiful Life](/source/Great_Big_Beautiful_Life)*, all of which are [*New York Times* bestsellers](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list).

## Biography

Henry was born on May 17, 1991.[1] She attended [Lakota East High School](/source/Lakota_East_High_School) in [Liberty Township](/source/Liberty_Township,_Butler_County,_Ohio), [Ohio](/source/Ohio), then [Hope College](/source/Hope_College) on a creative writing scholarship with plans to study dance.[2] She also completed a writing residency at the now-defunct New York Center for Art & Media Studies, part of [Bethel University](/source/Bethel_University_(Minnesota)).[3] She returned to Cincinnati after college; she currently lives and writes in Cincinnati and Northern [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky)'s [Ohio River](/source/Ohio_River) region. As of 2016, she was a full-time writer and proofreader.[3]

## Writing career

Henry's debut [young adult](/source/Young_adult_fiction) novel, *The Love That Split the World*, was published in January 2016.[4][5] After writing several young adult novels, her first adult romance novel, *[Beach Read](/source/Beach_Read),* was published in 2020, to widespread success.[6] Henry's books have been featured in [BuzzFeed](/source/BuzzFeed), *[O, The Oprah Magazine](/source/O,_The_Oprah_Magazine)*, *[Entertainment Weekly](/source/Entertainment_Weekly)*, *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)*, [The Skimm](/source/The_Skimm), and [Shondaland](/source/Shondaland).

Henry continued to write adult romance novels. In 2021, *[People We Meet on Vacation](/source/People_We_Meet_on_Vacation)* was published. *[Book Lovers](/source/Book_Lovers)* was published in 2022 and *[Happy Place](/source/Happy_Place_(novel))* in 2023.[7] *[Funny Story](/source/Funny_Story_(novel))* was published in April 2024.[8] Her sixth adult romance book, *[Great Big Beautiful Life](/source/Great_Big_Beautiful_Life)*, was published on April 22, 2025.

As of March 2023, Henry had sold more than 2.4 million books collectively.[9]

Writing for *[Vulture](/source/Vulture_(website))* in 2023, Allison P. Davis described Henry's books as containing elements of the [rom-com](/source/Romantic_comedy) and [chick lit](/source/Chick_lit) genres and focusing on themes of "respect" as well as love.[9]

### On-screen adaptations

The first five of Henry's adult romance books have been optioned for on-screen adaptations.[10]

In October 2022, a film adaptation of *People We Meet on Vacation* by Sony's [3000 Pictures](/source/3000_Pictures) from a screenplay by Yulin Kuang was announced, with [Brett Haley](/source/Brett_Haley) directing and [Temple Hill](/source/Temple_Hill_Entertainment) producing.[11] In September 2024, it was announced that [Tom Blyth](/source/Tom_Blyth) and [Emily Bader](/source/Emily_Bader) would play Alex and Poppy. The movie was released on January 9, 2026.[12] On April 5, 2023, it was announced that Kuang would also write and direct a film adaptation of *Beach Read* for [20th Century](/source/20th_Century_Studios).[13]

On March 28, 2023, a film adaptation of *Book Lovers* by the production company [Tango](/source/Tango_Entertainment) was announced, with [Sarah Heyward](/source/Sarah_Heyward) attached to write the script.[14] [Jennifer Lopez](/source/Jennifer_Lopez)'s production company, [Nuyorican Productions](/source/Nuyorican_Productions), plans to develop *Happy Place* into a TV series for Netflix.[15][16]

Henry plans to write the film adaptation for *Funny Story* herself.[17]
