# Emily Abbot

**Emily Abbot** (born 28 February 1997)[1] is an Australian group [rhythmic gymnast](/source/Rhythmic_gymnast) who represented [Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics](/source/Australia_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics).[1]

## Personal life

Emily Abbot was born on 28 February 1997 in [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide). She began [rhythmic gymnastics](/source/Rhythmic_gymnastics) when she was ten years old.[2] She graduated from the [University of Adelaide](/source/University_of_Adelaide) in 2018 and is currently studying business at [TAFE Queensland](/source/TAFE_Queensland). She now lives in [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane) and works as a disability support carer in addition to her gymnastics training.[3]

## Career

Abbot missed the 2016 season due to hip injuries. She first had a [hip arthroscopy](/source/Hip_arthroscopy) to repair a detached ligament, but then doctors discovered a bone tumor in her hip and she had another surgery to remove it. She returned to competition at the end of 2017.[4]

In October 2018, Abbot moved to Brisbane to train with Australia's senior rhythmic gymnastics group.[4] At the [2018 World Championships](/source/2018_Rhythmic_Gymnastics_World_Championships), she finished twenty-ninth with her group.[5] She represented [Australia at the 2019 Summer Universiade](/source/Australia_at_the_2019_Summer_Universiade).[6] She finished seventh in the group all-around,[7] seventh in the 5 [balls](/source/Ball_(rhythmic_gymnastics)) final,[8] and fifth in the 3 [hoops](/source/Hoop_(rhythmic_gymnastics)) + 4 [clubs](/source/Clubs_(rhythmic_gymnastics)) final.[9]

She won a gold medal at the 2021 Oceanic Championships with the Australian senior group and [qualified a quota for the 2020 Olympic Games](/source/Gymnastics_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Qualification). She was selected to represent [Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics](/source/Australia_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics) alongside [Alexandra Aristoteli](/source/Alexandra_Aristoteli), [Alannah Mathews](/source/Alannah_Mathews), [Himeka Onoda](/source/Himeka_Onoda), and [Felicity White](/source/Felicity_White).[10] They were the first rhythmic gymnastics group to represent [Australia at the Olympics](/source/Australia_at_the_Olympics).[11] They finished fourteenth in the qualification round for [the group all-around](/source/Gymnastics_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_rhythmic_group_all-around).[12]
