# Emery Peak

**Emery Peak** is a 13,321-foot (4,060-meter) [summit](/source/Summit) located in [San Juan County](/source/San_Juan_County,_Colorado), [Colorado](/source/Colorado), United States.

## Description

Emery Peak is situated six miles northeast of the town of [Silverton](/source/Silverton,_Colorado) on land administered by the [Bureau of Land Management](/source/Bureau_of_Land_Management).[3] It is set seven miles west of the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas) in the [San Juan Mountains](/source/San_Juan_Mountains) which are a subrange of the [Rocky Mountains](/source/Rocky_Mountains). [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the summit rises 2,700 feet (820 meters) above Cement Creek in 1.5 mile. Precipitation [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from the mountain drains into tributaries of the [Animas River](/source/Animas_River). The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names),[4] and has been recorded in publications since at least 1906.[5]

## Climate

According to the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) system, Emery Peak is located in an alpine [subarctic climate](/source/Subarctic_climate) zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and cool to warm summers.[6] Due to its altitude, it receives precipitation all year, as snow in winter and as thunderstorms in summer, with a dry period in late spring. Hikers can expect afternoon rain, hail, and lightning from the seasonal monsoon in late July and August.
