'''Emanuel Max''', after 1876: '''Ritter von Wachstein''' (19 October 1810 – 22 February 1901) was a German-Czech sculptor. His brother was the sculptor [Josef Max](/source/Josef_Max).

== Life ==
Max was born on 19 October 1810 in Janov, [Bohemia](/source/Bohemia), [Austrian Empire](/source/Austrian_Empire) (today part of [Nový Bor](/source/Nov%C3%BD_Bor), Czech Republic).<ref>{{cite book |last=Prokop|first=Toman|title=Nový slovník československých výtvarných umělců|volume=2|publisher=Rudolf Ryšavý|location=Prague|year=1950|language=cs}}</ref> He was born into a family of sculptors and woodcarvers and received his first lessons from his father. He later studied painting at the [Academy of Fine Arts, Prague](/source/Academy_of_Fine_Arts%2C_Prague), under [Joseph Bergler](/source/Joseph_Bergler) and {{ill|František Kristian Waldherr|cs}}. The academy did not have a sculpture department at that time, so he also studied at the [Vienna Academy of Fine Arts](/source/Vienna_Academy_of_Fine_Arts) with [Johann Nepomuk Schaller](/source/Johann_Nepomuk_Schaller) and Franz Käßmann (1760–1833).

From 1839 to 1849, he lived in Italy, where he improved his knowledge of the old masters and came under the influence of newer masters, such as [Antonio Canova](/source/Antonio_Canova) and [Bertel Thorvaldsen](/source/Bertel_Thorvaldsen). He also honed his technical skills by carving [Carrara marble](/source/Carrara_marble). When he returned to [Prague](/source/Prague), he opened his own successful sculpting workshop and got married.

He was named a Knight of the [Order of Franz Joseph](/source/Order_of_Franz_Joseph) in 1858 and a member of the [Order of the Iron Crown](/source/Order_of_the_Iron_Crown_(Austria)) (Class III) in 1875. The following year, he was knighted by Emperor [Franz Joseph](/source/Franz_Joseph_I_of_Austria) and given the noble appellation "von Wachstein".<ref>{{cite book |last=Vavřínek|first=Karel|title=Almanach českých šlechtických a rytířských rodů 2008|publisher=Martin|location=Brandýs nad Labem|year=2007|isbn=978-80-85955-36-1|language=cs}}</ref>

He died on 22 February 1901 in Prague.<ref>{{cite book |last=Szabo|first=Miloš|title=Pražské hřbitovy. Olšanské hřbitovy III.|publisher=Libri|location=Prague|year=2011|isbn=978-80-7277-487-6|language=cs}}</ref>
