**Elwin Bay** is an [Arctic](/source/Arctic) waterway in the [Qikiqtaaluk Region](/source/Qikiqtaaluk_Region), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut), Canada. It is located [Prince Regent Inlet](/source/Prince_Regent_Inlet) by the northeastern shore of [Somerset Island](/source/Somerset_Island_(Nunavut)). The abandoned [trading post](/source/Trading_post) of [Port Leopold](/source/Port_Leopold) lies 40 km (25 mi) north.[2]

## History

In 1852, in search of [Franklin's lost expedition](/source/Franklin's_lost_expedition), the French [Arctic](/source/Arctic) explorer Lieutenant [Joseph René Bellot](/source/Joseph_Ren%C3%A9_Bellot) spent time in the bay and its surrounds.[3]

It is filled with the skeletons and bones of several hundred [beluga](/source/Beluga_whale) left by [whalers](/source/Whaling). Many hunters died on whaling expeditions.
