Budolfsen graduated in pharmacy from the [Danish Pharmaceutical College](/source/University_of_Copenhagen_Faculty_of_Health_and_Medical_Sciences) in 1971 and went on to earn an M.Sc. in biology in 1973.<ref name=kvinfo/> She received the title of businesswoman of the year in 1997 and has been a member of the {{Interlanguage link multi|Danish Academy of Technical Sciences|da|3=Akademiet for de Tekniske Videnskaber}} since 1991.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/person.asp?personId=1446669&privcapId=1446592&previousCapId=30122821&previousTitle=ADMIRAL%20CAPITAL%20B|title=Elsebeth Budolfsen Msc|publisher=BloombergBusiness|accessdate=8 September 2015 |language=}}</ref>

Budolsen has become a strong supporter of women in top management. In an interview with the Danish newspaper ''[Berlingske](/source/Berlingske)'', she explained: "Modern employees want a new kind of leadership. They no longer seek top-down orders on what they have to do. It is here women can offer a different kind of management. The new Y generation want a more holistic approach. Elsebeth Budolfsen is the daughter of the medical specialist Svend Erik Budolfsen and the physiotherapist Kirsten Elisabeth Larsen.
