Lystad made her stage debut in 1956, and her breakthrough as actress came in the mid-1960s. Lystad was assigned to [Det Norske Teatret](/source/Det_Norske_Teatret) from 1958 to 1964, and thereafter [Chat Noir](/source/Chat_Noir), [Fjernsynsteatret](/source/Fjernsynsteatret), [Oslo Nye Teater](/source/Oslo_Nye_Teater), and [Den Nationale Scene](/source/Den_Nationale_Scene) until 1980. As [freelancer](/source/freelancer) she has later played for the theatres [Nationaltheatret](/source/Nationaltheatret), [Riksteatret](/source/Riksteatret), Chat Noir, ABC-teatret and [Hålogaland Teater](/source/H%C3%A5logaland_Teater), as well as revue assignments.<ref name=snl/>

Her breakthrough came in 1965 at the revue theatre Lysthuset in Oslo, where she played in collaboration with [Rolv Wesenlund](/source/Rolv_Wesenlund) and [Harald Heide-Steen Jr.](/source/Harald_Heide-Steen_Jr.) She was subsequently engaged with [Einar Schanke](/source/Einar_Schanke) at Chat Noir, and played with Wesenlund in the film ''[Hurra for Andersens!](/source/Hurra_for_Andersens!)'' ==Personal life and death==
Born in [Oslo](/source/Oslo) on 9 July 1930, Lystad was a daughter of Erling Magnus Lystad and Thora Aamot. She married Arpad Robert Istvan Szemes (1930–1998) in 1965.<ref name=nbl/> They had three children.
