'''Ellweiler''' is an ''[Ortsgemeinde](/source/Ortsgemeinde_(Germany))'' – a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany) belonging to a ''[Verbandsgemeinde](/source/Verbandsgemeinde)'', a kind of collective municipality – in the [Birkenfeld](/source/Birkenfeld_(district)) [district](/source/Districts_of_Germany) in [Rhineland-Palatinate](/source/Rhineland-Palatinate), [Germany](/source/Germany). It belongs to the [''Verbandsgemeinde'' of Birkenfeld](/source/Birkenfeld_(Verbandsgemeinde)), whose seat is in the [like-named town](/source/Birkenfeld).

==Geography==

===Location===
The municipality lies on the Traunbach in the ''Schwarzwälder Hochwald'' (forest) in the [Hunsrück](/source/Hunsr%C3%BCck) near the boundary with the [Saarland](/source/Saarland). The municipal area is 67.6% wooded.

===Neighbouring municipalities===
Ellweiler borders in the north on the municipality of [Dambach](/source/Dambach%2C_Germany), in the east on the municipality of [Hoppstädten-Weiersbach](/source/Hoppst%C3%A4dten-Weiersbach) (''[Ortsteil](/source/Ortsteil)'' of Neubrücke) and in the south on the municipality of [Nohfelden](/source/Nohfelden) in the Saarland.

===Constituent communities===
Also belonging to Ellweiler are the outlying homesteads of Haumbach, Neubrücker Mühle and Steinautal.<ref>[http://www.statistik.rlp.de/fileadmin/dokumente/berichte/A1132_201001_ur_G.pdf Statistisches Landesamt Rheinland-Pfalz – Amtliches Verzeichnis der Gemeinden und Gemeindeteile] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151125005812/http://www.statistik.rlp.de/fileadmin/dokumente/berichte/A1132_201001_ur_G.pdf |date=2015-11-25 }}, Seite 19 (PDF)</ref>

==History==
In the 12th century, Ellweiler had its first documentary mention. After first being an [Electoral-Trier](/source/Electorate_of_Trier) [fief](/source/fief), it passed in 1480 to the [Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken](/source/Palatine_Zweibr%C3%BCcken).

==Politics==

===Municipal council===
The council is made up of 8 council members, who were elected by [majority vote](/source/Plurality_voting_system) at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009, and the honorary mayor as chairman.<ref>[http://wahlen.rlp.de/kw/wahlen/2009/gemeinderatswahlen/ergebnisse/1340202400.html Kommunalwahl Rheinland-Pfalz 2009, Gemeinderat]</ref>

===Mayor===

===Coat of arms===
The German blazon reads: ''{{lang|de|In geteiltem Schild oben eine rote Elchschaufel in Gold, unten ein rotbewehrter, -gezungter und -gekrönter wachsender goldener Löwe in Schwarz.}}''

The municipality's [arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) might in English [heraldic](/source/Heraldry) language be described thus: Per fess Or an elk's attire fesswise gules and sable issuant from base a demilion of the first armed, langued and crowned of the second.

The [elk's](/source/Moose) attire (that is, antler) is a [canting](/source/Canting_arms) [charge](/source/charge_(heraldry)) for the [German](/source/German_language) word ''Elch'', meaning “(Eurasian) elk” (that is to say, “moose”), which is taken to be the source of the first syllable in the village's name (the ''Weiler'' part means “[hamlet](/source/Hamlet_(place))”, but there is no canting charge for that). The lion is drawn from the arms formerly borne by the [Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken](/source/Palatine_Zweibr%C3%BCcken).

The arms have been borne since 1963.
