# Ellie Challis

**Ellie Challis** (born 23 March 2004) is a British [para swimmer](/source/Para_swimming). She represented Great Britain at the [2020](/source/2020_Summer_Paralympics) and [2024 Summer Paralympics](/source/2024_Summer_Paralympics).

## Career

Challis made her international debut at the [2019 World Para Swimming Championships](/source/2019_World_Para_Swimming_Championships) and won a bronze medal in the [women's 50 metre backstroke S3](/source/2019_World_Para_Swimming_Championships_%E2%80%93_Women's_50_metre_backstroke).[1]

Challis competed in the [women's 50 metre backstroke S3](/source/Swimming_at_the_2020_Summer_Paralympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_50_metre_backstroke#S3) event at the [2020 Summer Paralympics](/source/2020_Summer_Paralympics) and won a silver medal.[2]

## Personal life

Ellie Challis born in [Harold Wood](/source/Harold_Wood) and grew up in [Clacton](/source/Clacton), Essex and attended [Tendring Technology College](/source/Tendring_Technology_College).[3] When she was 16 months old, Challis contracted [meningitis](/source/Meningitis), which resulted in the [above knee amputation](/source/Above_knee_amputation) of her legs and a below elbow amputation of her arms.[4]

She was inspired to take up swimming after watching the movie *[Dolphin Tale](/source/Dolphin_Tale)*.[5]
