Late Cretaceous volcanic group in Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada

The **Ellesmere Island Volcanics** are a [Late Cretaceous](/source/Late_Cretaceous) [volcanic group](/source/Volcanic_group) of [volcanoes](/source/Volcano) and [lava](/source/Lava) flows in the [Qikiqtaaluk Region](/source/Qikiqtaaluk_Region) of northern [Ellesmere Island](/source/Ellesmere_Island), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut), Canada.

Ellesmere Island Volcanics are part of the [Arctic Cordillera](/source/Arctic_Cordillera). This volcanic province is among the northernmost volcanism on [Earth](/source/Earth).

## History

Even though these volcanics are about 90 million years old, the volcanoes and [cinder](/source/Scoria) are still discernible.[1] The volcanics of the Maskell Inlet Assemblage are mostly made up of [tuffs](/source/Tuff), with smaller flows. Compositionally these are mostly [andesite](/source/Andesite) or undifferentiated andesite/[basalt](/source/Basalt).

The volcanics on Ellesmere Island has been uncertainly associated to both the early volcanic activity of the [Iceland hotspot](/source/Iceland_hotspot) and the [Alpha Ridge](/source/Alpha_Ridge). The Ellesmere Island Volcanics are part of the [High Arctic Large Igneous Province](/source/High_Arctic_Large_Igneous_Province).[2]
