**Ellerslie** is a residential neighbourhood in southeast [Edmonton](/source/Edmonton), Alberta, Canada. The name was adopted by the McLaggan brothers, formerly of Scotland, who moved there in early 1890s, although there are several different theories why that name was adopted.[5]

A school district of that name was established by 1895, and a post office of that name was established in 1896. It was a rural area many kilometers south of the boundaries of the [Town of Edmonton](/source/Timeline_of_Edmonton_history#19th_century), incorporated in 1892.[6] Even after 1899 incorporation of the Town of Strathcona on the southside of the river, Ellerslie still maintained its relative isolation as a rural area. Its location along the Calgary-Edmonton Trail and the Calgary & Edmonton Railway gave it some significance.

The Ellerslie neighbourhood includes the **Wernerville** country residential area,[7] which is designated a special study area within the Ellerslie Area Structure Plan[8] and is recognized as a locality by [Statistics Canada](/source/Statistics_Canada).[9] Wernerville got its name from the large clan of Werner families that settled in the area starting in the 1890s. [10]

The Ellerslie neighbourhood is bounded on the south by Ellerslie Road, on the north by the [Anthony Henday Drive](/source/Anthony_Henday_Drive) corridor, on the east by 66 Street, and on the west by 91 Street. Wernerville comprises the easternmost portion of the neighbourhood.[7][8] Immediately north of the [Anthony Henday Drive](/source/Anthony_Henday_Drive) is the [Mill Woods](/source/Mill_Woods) area of Edmonton and the neighbourhoods of [Satoo](/source/Satoo,_Edmonton) and [Menisa](/source/Menisa,_Edmonton).

The most common type of residence in the neighbourhood is the [single family dwelling](/source/Single-family_detached_home). According to the 2005 municipal census, two out of every three residences (66%) were single-family dwellings. [Row houses](/source/Row_house) make up another one in five (20%) of residences followed by [apartment](/source/Apartment) style [condominiums](/source/Condominium_(living_space)) which make up 12% of all residences. The remaining 2% or residences were [duplexes](/source/Duplex_(building)).[11] Substantially all residences in Ellerslie are owner occupied.[12]

The community is represented by the Ellerslie [Community League](/source/Neighborhood_council), established in 1962.[13][14]

## Demographics

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Ellerslie had a population of living in dwellings,[15] a 5.7% change from its 2009 population of .[16] With a land area of 1.58 km2 (0.61 sq mi), it had a population density of people/km2 in 2012.[17][15]
