## Geography

The river is a tributary to the river [Tanaro](/source/Tanaro_River), which is a tributary of the river [Po](/source/Po_River). Its source is in *Pian Marchisio*, a large plateau of the [Ligurian Alps](/source/Ligurian_Alps). It flows northwards digging the *Valle Ellero*, which ends in the [Po plain](/source/Po_plain) near [Roccaforte Mondovì](/source/Roccaforte_Mondov%C3%AC).[3] The Ellero then follows its course through the plain turning NE, crosses [Villanova Mondovì](/source/Villanova_Mondov%C3%AC) (where it gets from [right hand](/source/Right_hand) the [Maudagna](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Maudagna&action=edit&redlink=1), its main tributary) and then after [Mondovì](/source/Mondov%C3%AC), with some [meanders](/source/Meander), reaches [Bastia Mondovì](/source/Bastia_Mondov%C3%AC) where it joins the river [Tanaro](/source/Tanaro).
