The church stands on a natural mound close to the highest point at the northern end of the hamlet and is dedicated to [St. Mary](/source/St._Mary). The grey sandstone chancel is the oldest part of the church dating from the 12th century, while the red-brick nave and tower represent a 1757 re-build of an earlier structure. The architect for the restoration was Andrew Capper.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.achurchnearyou.com/venue.php?V=4478 |title=Ellenhall, Ellenhall S.Mary Church - Staffordshire {{!}} Diocese of Lichfield<!-- Bot generated title --> |access-date=19 May 2008 |archive-date=10 January 2006 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060110023223/http://www.achurchnearyou.com/venue.php?V=4478 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
