# Elizabeth Toth

**Elizabeth Lance Toth** is professor emeritus at the [University of Maryland, College Park](/source/University_of_Maryland,_College_Park) known for her work on public relations research.

## Education and career

Toth has a B.A. from [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University) and an M.A. and a Ph.D from [Purdue University](/source/Purdue_University).[1] She worked in public relations from 1969 until 1981, before moving into academia.[2] Toth taught at [Southern Methodist University](/source/Southern_Methodist_University) and [Southern Illinois University](/source/Southern_Illinois_University_Carbondale), and was the associate dean of the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at [Syracuse University](/source/Syracuse_University).[3] In 2004[1] she joined the University of Maryland where she was professor and chair of the Department of Communication.[4] As of 2022, Toth is an emeritus professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.[5]

Toth was the editor of the *[Journal of Public Relations Research](/source/Journal_of_Public_Relations_Research)* from 1995 until 2000*.*[6]

She is known for her work on the role of women and gender in public relations.[7]

## Awards and honors

In 2012 she was honored by the [University of Alabama](/source/University_of_Alabama)'s Plank Center.[1] In 2020, the [Public Relations Society of America](/source/Public_Relations_Society_of_America) presented Toth with the Sage Award.[3]
