# Elizabeth Bethune

**Elizabeth Bethune**, or **Beaton** (died after 1581), was one of the mistresses of King [James V of Scotland](/source/James_V_of_Scotland). Their daughter, [Lady Jean Stewart](/source/Lady_Jean_Stewart), married [Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll](/source/Archibald_Campbell,_5th_Earl_of_Argyll).[1]

Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir [David Beaton of Creich](/source/David_Betoun_of_Creich), a nephew of [James Beaton](/source/James_Beaton), [Archbishop of St Andrews](/source/Archbishop_of_St_Andrews), and Keeper of [Falkland Palace](/source/Falkland_Palace).

As an infant, Elizabeth's daughter Jean Stewart was brought up in the household of [Mary of Guise](/source/Mary_of_Guise) (the Queen of Scotland as wife of King James V), and then briefly in the nursery of her legitimate half-brother, [Prince James, the Duke of Rothesay](/source/James,_Duke_of_Rothesay_(born_1540)), the infant son of King James V.[2]

Subsequently, Elizabeth was married to [John Stewart, 4th Lord Innermeath](/source/Lord_Innermeath), by whom she had two sons, [James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath](/source/James_Stewart,_5th_Lord_Innermeath) and the poet [John Stewart of Baldynneis](/source/John_Stewart_of_Baldynneis). Elizabeth and her husband John were granted lands in the parish of [Inverkeilor](/source/Inverkeilor) in May 1544.[3]

In 1572 she married secondly James Gray, son of [Patrick Gray, 4th Lord Gray](/source/Patrick_Gray,_4th_Lord_Gray). In 1578 Gray fathered a child by her niece, Isobel Beaton. The subsequent quarrel led to sieges of [Redcastle](/source/Red_Castle,_Angus) in [Angus](/source/Angus,_Scotland), and several court cases.[4] She got her divorce in 1581.[5]
