In [telecommunications](/source/Telecommunications), the term **electromagnetic environment** (**EME**) has the following meanings:

1. For a telecommunications [system](/source/System), the spatial distribution of [electromagnetic fields](/source/Electromagnetic_field) surrounding a given site. The electromagnetic environment may be expressed in terms of the spatial and temporal distribution of electric [field strength](/source/Field_strength) ([volts](/source/Volt) per metre), [irradiance](/source/Irradiance) ([watts](/source/Watt) per square metre), or energy density ([joules](/source/Joule) per cubic metre).
1. The resulting product of the [power](/source/Power_(physics)) and [time](/source/Time) distribution, in various [frequency](/source/Frequency) ranges, of the radiated or conducted electromagnetic [emission](/source/Emission_(electromagnetic_radiation)) levels that may be encountered by a military force, system, or platform when performing its assigned mission in its intended operational environment. It is the sum of [electromagnetic interference](/source/Electromagnetic_interference); [electromagnetic pulse](/source/Electromagnetic_pulse); hazards of [electromagnetic radiation](/source/Electromagnetic_radiation) to personnel, ordnance, and volatile materials; and natural phenomena effects of [lightning](/source/Lightning) and p-static.
1. All electromagnetic phenomena observable in a given location.[1]
