**Electric Road** ([Chinese](/source/Traditional_Chinese_characters): 電氣道) is a street in the north of [Hong Kong Island](/source/Hong_Kong_Island) in the [Eastern District](/source/Eastern_District%2C_Hong_Kong) of Hong Kong. It spans from the [Tin Hau](/source/Tin_Hau%2C_Hong_Kong) area of [Causeway Bay](/source/Causeway_Bay), across [Fortress Hill](/source/Fortress_Hill) of [North Point](/source/North_Point) and connects east onto [Java Road](/source/Java_Road) in North Point.

## History

Electric Road remained unnamed when the [Hong Kong Tramway](/source/Hong_Kong_Tramways) was completed in 1904. In 1913, [Hongkong Electric](/source/Hongkong_Electric_Company) built [a new power station](/source/North_Point_Power_Station) on the new [reclamation](/source/Land_reclamation_in_Hong_Kong) of North Point to replace the one in [Wan Chai](/source/Wan_Chai). Its operation was delayed until summer 1919 because of [World War I](/source/World_War_I). The operation of the power station spurred the development of North Point. In 1929 after the improvement of the road, it was named 'Electric Road' after the power station.[1] Before the completion of [King's Road](/source/King's_Road_(Hong_Kong)), it was the busiest road in North Point.

[North Point Power Station](/source/North_Point_Power_Station) was officially decommissioned in 1978. The site is now part of the large scale [City Garden](/source/City_Garden) housing development.[2]
