The '''Elbe Cycle Route''' ('''Elberadweg''' in [German](/source/German_language)) is part of an international network of [cycling routes](/source/List_of_cycleways) all over [Europe](/source/Europe). It is integrated in the system of currently 37 river cycling routes in [Germany](/source/Germany) and by far the most popular route for cyclists in this country.

The Elbe Cycle Route starts in [Špindlerův Mlýn](/source/%C5%A0pindler%C5%AFv_Ml%C3%BDn) in the [Giant Mountains](/source/Giant_Mountains). It then runs for about 1220 km until it ends in [Cuxhaven](/source/Cuxhaven) at the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea). Part of it falls together with the EV7 of the [EuroVelo](/source/EuroVelo) network. One variety of the route starts in [Prague](/source/Prague), following the river [Vltava](/source/Vltava) to the [Elbe](/source/Elbe).

After a fairly adventurous part of the Route on the [Czech](/source/Czech_Republic) side of the river one reaches the famous [Elbe Sandstone Mountains](/source/Elbe_Sandstone_Mountains) in [Bohemian Switzerland](/source/Bohemian_Switzerland) and [Saxon Switzerland](/source/Saxon_Switzerland) and crosses the border to Germany. Shortly after this the Route leads through, [Dresden](/source/Dresden) and later through other cities like [Meißen](/source/Mei%C3%9Fen), Lutherstadt [Wittenberg](/source/Wittenberg), [Dessau](/source/Dessau), [Magdeburg](/source/Magdeburg), [Tangermünde](/source/Tangerm%C3%BCnde), [Lauenburg](/source/Lauenburg), [Hamburg](/source/Hamburg), [Cuxhaven](/source/Cuxhaven).

There are many small [village](/source/village)s with old [churches](/source/Church_(building)) and other interesting sites along the way. A lot of [restaurant](/source/restaurant)s and [pension](/source/Pension_(lodging))s offer their service to the weary after a day of cycling.

One of the other reasons however for its popularity is probably the fact that there are no significant level changes from Dresden on. It is practically downhill all the way from Dresden to Cuxhaven while the other direction mostly offers slight tailwinds.

The Elbe Cycling Route is marked throughout Germany with a special sign.
