# El Monte, Chile

**El Monte** is a [Chilean](/source/Chile) [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in [Talagante Province](/source/Talagante_Province), [Santiago Metropolitan Region](/source/Santiago_Metropolitan_Region). As of 2007, it had a population of 29,568.

## Geography

El Monte can be found on the north bank of the [Mapocho River](/source/Mapocho_River) in the [Chilean Central Valley](/source/Chilean_Central_Valley) approximately 55 km (34 mi) southwest of the metropolitan area of [Santiago](/source/Santiago,_Chile). The commune spans an area of 118.1 km2 (46 sq mi).[3]

## Demographics

According to 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), El Monte spans an area of 118.1 km2 (46 sq mi) and had 26,459 inhabitants (13,334 men and 13,125 women). Of these, 22,284 (84.2%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 4,175 (15.8%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). The population grew by 20.9% (4,577 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[3]

## Administration

As a commune, El Monte is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2012–2016 alcalde is Francisco Gómez Ramírez ([PS](/source/Socialist_Party_of_Chile)).[4][5] The communal council has the following members:

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), El Monte is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Denise Pascal ([PS](/source/Socialist_Party_of_Chile)) and Gonzalo Uriarte ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)) as part of the 31st electoral district, (together with [Talagante](/source/Talagante), [Peñaflor](/source/Pe%C3%B1aflor,_Chile), [Isla de Maipo](/source/Isla_de_Maipo), [Melipilla](/source/Melipilla), [María Pinto](/source/Mar%C3%ADa_Pinto), [Curacaví](/source/Curacav%C3%AD), [Alhué](/source/Alhu%C3%A9), [San Pedro](/source/San_Pedro,_Chile) and [Padre Hurtado](/source/Padre_Hurtado)). The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Guido Girardi Lavín ([PPD](/source/Party_for_Democracy_(Chile))) and Jovino Novoa Vásquez (UDI) as part of the 7th senatorial constituency (Santiago-West).
