**Eider Gardiazabal Rubial** is a Spanish politician of the [Spanish Socialist Workers' Party](/source/Spanish_Socialist_Workers'_Party) (PSOE)[1] who has been serving as a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament) since the [2009 elections](/source/2009_European_Parliament_election).

## Political career

Since joining the European Parliament, Gardiazabal Rubial has been serving as a member of the [Committee on Budgets](/source/Committee_on_Budgets). She is also her parliamentary group's coordinator on the committee.[2] In this capacity, she was the parliament's [rapporteur](/source/Rapporteur) on the [2015 budget](/source/Budget_of_the_European_Union) (along with [Monika Hohlmeier](/source/Monika_Hohlmeier)) and on the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Europe) recovery fund in 2020 (along with [Siegfried Mureşan](/source/Siegfried_Mure%C5%9Fan) and [Dragoș Pîslaru](/source/Drago%C8%99_P%C3%AEslaru)).[3] In 2019, she drafted (together with [Petri Sarvamaa](/source/Petri_Sarvamaa)) legislation on cutting EU funds to [member states](/source/Member_state_of_the_European_Union) that undermine the [rule of law](/source/Rule_of_law).[4][5]

In addition to her committee assignments, Gardiazabal Rubial is a member of the delegation to the [ACP–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly](/source/ACP%E2%80%93EU_Joint_Parliamentary_Assembly). She is also part of the [Spinelli Group](/source/Spinelli_Group),[6] the [European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights](/source/European_Parliament_Intergroup_on_LGBT_Rights)[7] and of the European Parliament Intergroup on Integrity (Transparency, Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime).[8]

## Personal life

Her mother [Lentxu Rubial](/source/Lentxu_Rubial) and grandfather [Ramón Rubial](/source/Ram%C3%B3n_Rubial) were both members of the [Senate of Spain](/source/Senate_of_Spain) ([Biscay constituency](/source/Biscay_(Senate_constituency))) representing the PSOE, the latter also serving as president of the party between 1976 and 1999.
