# Eemsmond

**Eemsmond** (ˈeːmsmɔnt; English: *[Ems](/source/Ems_(river)) [Mouth](/source/River_mouth)*) is a former [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_the_Netherlands) with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of [Groningen](/source/Groningen_(province)) in the northeast of the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of [Bedum](/source/Bedum), [De Marne](/source/De_Marne) and [Winsum](/source/Winsum) to form the new municipality [Het Hogeland](/source/Het_Hogeland).

## History

The municipality of [Hefshuizen](/source/Hefshuizen) was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of [Uithuizen](/source/Uithuizen) and [Uithuizermeeden](/source/Uithuizermeeden). On 1 January 1990, the municipalities of [Kantens](/source/Kantens), [Usquert](/source/Usquert), and [Warffum](/source/Warffum) were added. On 1 January 1992, the name of the municipality was changed from *Hefshuizen* to *Eemsmond*, which means [Ems](/source/Ems_(river)) [Mouth](/source/River_mouth).[1]

## Geography

Eemsmond is located at in the north of the province of [Groningen](/source/Groningen_(province)) and in the northeast of the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands).

The population centers in the municipality are: [Eemshaven](/source/Eemshaven), [Eppenhuizen](/source/Eppenhuizen), [Kantens](/source/Kantens), [Oldenzijl](/source/Oldenzijl), [Oosteinde](/source/Oosteinde,_Groningen), [Oosternieland](/source/Oosternieland), [Oudeschip](/source/Oudeschip), [Roodeschool](/source/Roodeschool), [Rottum](/source/Rottum,_Groningen), [Startenhuizen](/source/Startenhuizen), [Stitswerd](/source/Stitswerd), [Uithuizen](/source/Uithuizen), [Uithuizermeeden](/source/Uithuizermeeden), [Usquert](/source/Usquert), [Warffum](/source/Warffum), and [Zandeweer](/source/Zandeweer).

To the north of Eemsmond is the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea). Part of the [Wadden Sea](/source/Wadden_Sea), a UNESCO [World Heritage Site](/source/World_Heritage_Site) since 2009, is located in the municipality, including the sandbank [Simonszand](/source/Simonszand) and the uninhabited islands [Rottumeroog](/source/Rottumeroog), [Rottumerplaat](/source/Rottumerplaat), and [Zuiderduintjes](/source/Zuiderduintjes). The [northernmost point of the Netherlands](/source/Extreme_points_of_the_Netherlands) is located at Rottumerplaat.

## Culture

Eemsmond hosted the start of stage 4 at the [2013 Energiewacht Tour](/source/2013_Energiewacht_Tour).

## Government

[Marijke van Beek](/source/Marijke_van_Beek) of the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(Netherlands)) (PvdA) was the last mayor of Eemsmond.[2]

## Transportation

The [Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway](/source/Sauwerd%E2%80%93Roodeschool_railway) connects the railway stations [Warffum](/source/Warffum_railway_station), [Usquert](/source/Usquert_railway_station), [Uithuizen](/source/Uithuizen_railway_station), [Uithuizermeeden](/source/Uithuizermeeden_railway_station), and [Roodeschool](/source/Roodeschool_railway_station) to the [Groningen railway station](/source/Groningen_railway_station) and the rest of the [Dutch railway network](/source/Train_routes_in_the_Netherlands).
