==Biography==
Edwin Regan was born in [Port Talbot](/source/Port_Talbot), and studied at [St. John's Seminary, Waterford](/source/St._John's_College%2C_Waterford), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland), where he was [ordained](/source/Holy_Orders) to the [priesthood](/source/Priesthood_(Catholic_Church)) on 5 July 1959. He then served as assistant [pastor](/source/Curate) at [http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~dahayman St. Alban's Church] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081205035418/http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~dahayman/ |date=5 December 2008 }} in [Pontypool](/source/Pontypool) (1959) and at [https://web.archive.org/web/20080705142207/http://www.catholicneath.org/St%20Joseph%20Neath.html St. Joseph's Church] in [Neath](/source/Neath) (1959–1966). From 1966 to 1967, he attended [Corpus Christi College](/source/Corpus_Christi_College%2C_Cambridge) in [London](/source/London), obtaining a [diploma](/source/diploma) in [catechetics](/source/Catechism).

Regan served as [chaplain](/source/chaplain) to Porthcawl Convent from 1967 to 1971, whence he became director of catechetics and [cathedral](/source/Cardiff_Cathedral) administrator for the [Archdiocese of Cardiff](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Cardiff). He was raised to the rank of [Honorary](/source/Title_of_honor) [Canon](/source/Canon_(priest)) in 1978, and [Chapter](/source/Chapter_(religion)) Canon in 1985. He was later pastor of St Helen's Church in [Barry](/source/Barry%2C_Vale_of_Glamorgan) (1984–1989) and of St. Mary's Church in [Bridgend](/source/Bridgend) (1989–1994).

On 7 November 1994, Regan was appointed [Bishop of Wrexham](/source/Bishop_of_Wrexham) by [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II). He received his [episcopal consecration](/source/Bishop_(Catholic_Church)) on the following 13 December from [Archbishop John Ward](/source/John_Aloysius_Ward), [OFM Cap](/source/Order_of_Friars_Minor_Capuchin), with Bishops [Daniel Mullins](/source/Daniel_Joseph_Mullins) and [Vincent Nichols](/source/Vincent_Gerard_Nichols) serving as [co-consecrators](/source/Consecrator).

In addition to his Wrexham post, Regan was named [Apostolic Administrator](/source/Apostolic_Administrator) of the [Archdiocese of Cardiff](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Cardiff) in December 2000, to assist the ailing Archbishop Ward in governing the archdiocese.<ref name=bbc>{{cite news |date=2000-12-19 |work=BBC News |title=Pope appoints stand-in archbishop |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/1077593.stm}}</ref> This appointment was considered unusual, as an Apostolic Administrator is normally named when the sitting [Ordinary](/source/Ordinary_(Catholic_Church)) has either died or resigned. Regan remained in the post until the appointment of [Peter Smith](/source/Peter_Smith_(archbishop)) as the new [Archbishop of Cardiff](/source/Archbishop_of_Cardiff) on 26 October 2001.

On 27 June 2012 it was announced that [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) had accepted Bishop Regan's resignation because he had reached the age limit and had appointed Mgr [Peter Brignall](/source/Peter_Malcolm_Brignall), Vicar General of Wrexham, to succeed him as third bishop of the diocese.
