==Personal life==
Mayfield was born in [Brantingham](/source/Brantingham), [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire) in 1870 to Joseph Robinson Mayfield, a paper manufacturer from Hemel Hempstead. Mayfield was educated at several schools, including [Lockers Park School](/source/Lockers_Park_School) and [The Leys School](/source/The_Leys_School), before going up to [Caius College, Cambridge](/source/Gonville_and_Caius_College%2C_Cambridge) in 1888.<ref name=Venn>{{acad|id=MFLT888E|name=Mayfield, Edwin}}</ref> He graduated in 1891 and was [called to the bar](/source/called_to_the_bar), through the [Middle Temple](/source/Middle_Temple) in 1898.

Mayfield was commissioned as a [second lieutenant](/source/second_lieutenant) in the [Royal Sussex Militia Artillery](/source/Royal_Sussex_Militia_Artillery) on 2 March 1900.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=27173| page=1715|date=13 March 1900}}</ref> He saw active service during the [First World War](/source/World_War_I), reaching the temporary rank of [lieutenant colonel](/source/lieutenant_colonel) and also served with the newly formed [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force).

==Rugby career==
Mayfield first came to note as a rugby player, when he represented Cambridge during his student years. In 1891 he won a sporting 'Blue' when he represented Cambridge in the 1891 [Varsity Match](/source/The_Varsity_Match). In 1891 Mayfield was selected to take part in the first official British Isles tour when he joined [Bill Maclagan](/source/Bill_Maclagan)'s team on their [tour of South Africa](/source/1891_British_Lions_tour_to_South_Africa). Mayfield was not part of the First Test at Port Elizabeth, but played in both the Second Test at Kimberley and the Third Test in Cape Town; both wins over the [South African national team](/source/South_Africa_national_rugby_union_team).
