**Edwin May** (1823–1880) was an American architect based in [Indianapolis](/source/Indianapolis), [Indiana](/source/Indiana). He designed several [county courthouses](/source/County_courthouse), the [Indiana State House](/source/Indiana_State_House) and other public hospital and school buildings, including the [Horace Mann Public School No. 13](/source/Horace_Mann_Public_School_No._13).[1] He also received patents for his fireproofing designs. During the construction of his final project, the [Indiana State House](/source/Indiana_State_House), he became paralyzed, traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to recover and died. [Adolf Scherrer](/source/Adolf_Scherrer) took over the project.[2]

He was born in [Boston](/source/Boston), [Massachusetts](/source/Massachusetts).[2] [Louis Henry Gibson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Louis_Henry_Gibson&action=edit&redlink=1) worked as a draftsman in his office.[2]

Edwin died on February 27, 1880, at the age of fifty-six.
