# Edwin Bardsley

**Edwin Bardsley** (1883 – 18 November 1916) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played in the [Football League](/source/The_Football_League) for [Stockport County](/source/Stockport_County_F.C.) and [Glossop](/source/Glossop_A.F.C.) as an [outside left](/source/Outside_left).[1] His career was ended due to a broken leg suffered in a collision with [William Foulke](/source/William_Foulke_(footballer)).[2]

## Personal life

Bardsley served as a [private](/source/Private_(rank)) in the [Manchester Regiment](/source/Manchester_Regiment) during the [First World War](/source/World_War_I) and was killed during the [Battle of the Somme](/source/Battle_of_the_Somme) on 18 November 1916, while serving with the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment.[3] He is commemorated on the [Thiepval Memorial](/source/Thiepval_Memorial).[4]
