**Edward Oppenheimer** (born June 4, 1957) is an American photojournalist based in [Moscow](/source/Moscow), Russia.[1][2] He currently works as Director of Photography for the Russian media group [Kommersant](/source/Kommersant) in Moscow.[3]

## Biography

Edward Oppenheimer grew up in [Klamath Falls](/source/Klamath_Falls), a small town in southern [Oregon](/source/Oregon). At age 13 he lived a year with his Uncle and family in [Yokohama](/source/Yokohama), [Japan](/source/Japan). There he was given his first camera and became a member of the school's[4] photography club. His last two years in high school he worked as a photographer/laboratory assistant at the local newspaper, [The Herald and News](/source/Herald_and_News).[5] After that time Edward Oppenheimer would return to photography only after his move to Moscow, Russia in 1992.

In 1980 he graduated from [Lewis and Clark College](/source/Lewis_and_Clark_College) with honors in Economics and a second degree in French. The last few years in college he began studying classical guitar and after graduation went to Paris to study with Michel Sadanowski[6] at «L'Universite Musicale Internationale de Paris». In 1983 a hand injury forced him to abandon musical studies. He moved to [New York City](/source/New_York_City) and began working as a marketing analyst at Nabisco,[7] during that time he took acting lessons at [HB Studio](/source/HB_Studio) in Greenwich Village. In 1985 he began studying programming and in 1987, following a visit to a friend in Sweden, took a job in [Stockholm](/source/Stockholm) with a small startup company, Dynasoft,[8] developing security software.

After a short tour of the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) in 1989 Oppenheimer soon returned to [Leningrad](/source/Leningrad) to study Russian for a year at the [University of Leningrad](/source/Saint_Petersburg_State_University).[9] Impressed by the [events unfolding in the Soviet Union in 1991](/source/1991_Soviet_coup_d'%C3%A9tat_attempt), he moved to Moscow in 1992 and found work as a photographer for [Kommersant](/source/Kommersant), one of the new generation of newspapers to appear on the wave of Perestroika. In Moscow he studied photography with [Alexander Lapin](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9B%D0%B0%D0%BF%D0%B8%D0%BD%2C_%D0%90%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B4%D1%80_%D0%98%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%84%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87). During the 1990s he also worked freelance for several leading western publications and photo agencies, such as *[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))* magazine, *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)*, *[The Washington Post](/source/The_Washington_Post)*, *[Fortune](/source/Fortune_(magazine))*, *[Stern](/source/Stern_(magazine))*, *[Sunday Times](/source/Sunday_Times)*, *[The Independent](/source/The_Independent)*, [Black Star](/source/Black_Star_(photo_agency)), and [Sipa Press](/source/Sipa_Press).

Oppenheimer (Opp) photographed a wide variety of social themes in Russia –village life, orphans, medical institutions, prostitution. Oppenheimer made several trips to the [North Caucasus](/source/North_Caucasus) region during the [First Chechen War](/source/First_Chechen_War) and covered the [Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis](/source/Budyonnovsk_hospital_hostage_crisis) in 1995 and [Pervomayskoye crisis](/source/Kizlyar-Pervomayskoye_hostage_crisis) in 1996 for *Time* magazine. He was an accredited photographer at the [Russian State Duma](/source/State_Duma) and the Kremlin during the presidency of [Boris Yeltsin](/source/Boris_Yeltsin).

Edward Opp's photographic style has been described by some as documentary and "impassive…, frightful…, cold…, hypersensitive to the moment".[10] He is currently Director of photography at the [Kommersant](/source/Kommersant) Publishing House in Moscow which publishes a national daily newspaper, several news weekly and monthly periodicals, and is well known for its distinctive photographic approach.[3][11][12] Oppenheimer (Opp) is a frequent guest of Russian cultural and political television discussion programs.[13][14][15]
