**Edward Ball Knobel** (21 October 1841 – 25 July 1930) was an English businessman and amateur [astronomer](/source/Astronomer). He was born in [London](/source/London), England.

He started to study law but his love of [geology](/source/Geology) made him change to the [Government School of Mines](/source/Government_School_of_Mines) (now part of [Imperial College London](/source/Imperial_College_London)) in 1861. In 1862, he changed his career again, starting to work for [Bass & Co.](/source/Bass_(beer)) at [Burton upon Trent](/source/Burton_upon_Trent) as an [analytical chemist](/source/Chemist) in the brewery department. He rose to become a manager and [Head Brewer](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Head_Brewer&action=edit&redlink=1). He then became a manager of a [Courtauld's](/source/Samuel_Courtauld_(industrialist)) [silk](/source/Silk) factory at [Bocking](/source/Braintree%2C_Essex) in 1875. His final position was with the [Ilford Photographic Company](/source/Ilford_Photo).

In 1872, he purchased an 8.5 inch [reflecting telescope](/source/Reflecting_telescope) to further his interest in astronomy. His work on a publication about the chronology of [star catalogues](/source/Star_catalogues) in 1875 let him to study the work of early [Arab](/source/Arab) astronomers and learn some [Arabic](/source/Arabic_language) and [Persian](/source/Persian_language). He then prepared a new edition of the star catalogue in the [Almagest](/source/Almagest) using all available sources in Greek, Arabic and Latin. After a long collaboration with [C. H. F. Peters](/source/C._H._F._Peters), a final collated version was published in 1915.[1] In 1917 he published a translation of [Ulugh Beg](/source/Ulugh_Beg)'s star catalogue.[2] He was President of both the [British Astronomical Association](/source/British_Astronomical_Association) and the [Royal Astronomical Society](/source/Royal_Astronomical_Society) (1892–1893 and 1900–1901).

The Knobel Crater is located next to the [Gale (crater)](/source/Gale_(crater))

A [crater](/source/Impact_crater) on [Mars](/source/Mars) was named in his honour.
