**Edward Hopkinson** (28 May 1859 – 15 January 1922) was a British [civil](/source/Civil_engineering), [mechanical](/source/Mechanical_engineering) and [electrical engineer](/source/Electrical_engineering), and [Conservative](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician.

## Background and education

Hopkinson was the fourth son of John Hopkinson, an engineer who was [mayor of Manchester](/source/Lord_Mayor_of_Manchester) in 1882/83.[1][2]

Hopkinson was educated at [Owen's College](/source/Owen's_College), [Manchester](/source/Manchester) and [Emmanuel College, Cambridge](/source/Emmanuel_College%2C_Cambridge).[3] He graduated from Cambridge in 1881 and was made a fellow of Emmanuel in 1883. In 1882 he began to study mechanical and electrical engineering under Sir [William Siemens](/source/William_Siemens), and received a [doctorate](/source/Doctorate) from the [University of London](/source/University_of_London).[1]

Hopkinson married Minnie Campbell (1862-1936) of [County Antrim](/source/County_Antrim), and they had two children, Edward Campbell (1889-1966) and [Katharine Campbell](/source/Katharine_Chorley) (1897-1986).[4] His elder brothers included the noted physicist and engineer [John Hopkinson](/source/John_Hopkinson), and Sir [Alfred Hopkinson](/source/Alfred_Hopkinson), vice-chancellor of the [University of Manchester](/source/University_of_Manchester), and amongst his nephews were engineer and scientist [Bertram Hopkinson](/source/Bertram_Hopkinson), and [Austin Hopkinson](/source/Austin_Hopkinson), MP.

He was elected to membership of the [Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society](/source/Manchester_Literary_and_Philosophical_Society) on 3 November 1896[5]

Edward Hopkinson died at his residence in [Alderley Edge](/source/Alderley_Edge), [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire) in 1922, aged 62,[1] his wife died in 1936.[4]

## Career

Hopkinson was involved in a number of large pioneering electrification projects. These included the [Bessbrook and Newry Tramway](/source/Bessbrook_and_Newry_Tramway), the [Snaefell Mountain Railway](/source/Snaefell_Mountain_Railway) the [Blackpool and Fleetwood tramways](/source/Blackpool_tramway) and the [City and South London Railway](/source/City_and_South_London_Railway). For a paper on his pioneering work on the Bessbrook and Newry tramway he was awarded the [Telford Medal](/source/Telford_Medal) in 1888 by the [Institution of Civil Engineers](/source/Institution_of_Civil_Engineers) and for a paper on his work on the C&SLR the [George Stephenson Medal](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=George_Stephenson_Medal&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1893 by the same society.[1] In 1884 he joined [Mather and Platt](/source/Mather_and_Platt) engineering company of [Salford](/source/Salford%2C_Greater_Manchester) as head of the electrical engineering department, and rose to become vice-chairman of the company.[1]

From 1916 to 1918 he was a member of the [Indian Industrial Commission](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Indian_Industrial_Commission&action=edit&redlink=1).[3]

## Politics

[In 1918](/source/1918_United_Kingdom_general_election) he was chosen as the [Coalition Conservative](/source/Coalition_Conservative) candidate for the newly formed [Clayton constituency of Manchester](/source/Manchester_Clayton_(UK_Parliament_constituency)). He was elected, defeating the [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) [MP](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)), [J E Sutton](/source/John_Edward_Sutton).
