# Edward George Wright

New Zealand politician (1831–1902)

**Edward George Wright** (14 June 1831 – 12 August 1902) was an independent conservative [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_parliament) in New Zealand.

## Biography

Wright was born in [Woolwich](/source/Woolwich), [Kent](/source/Kent), England, in 1831. After an education in private schools, he worked for [Fox, Henderson and Co](/source/Charles_Fox_(civil_and_railway_engineer)). He was the engineer for the gasworks in [Rome](/source/Rome) and then worked on the naval dockyards at [Royal Arsenal](/source/Royal_Arsenal) in [Woolwich](/source/Woolwich) and then [Aldershot](/source/Aldershot). He married in September 1854 at London and went to New Zealand with his wife and their first two sons in 1857, with another one born in their chosen country.[1]

In Canterbury, he was responsible for many of the engineering works, especially bridges.[1]

He represented the [Coleridge](/source/Coleridge_(New_Zealand_electorate)) electorate from [1879](/source/1879_New_Zealand_general_election) to 1881, then the [Ashburton](/source/Ashburton_(New_Zealand_electorate)) electorate from [1881](/source/1881_New_Zealand_general_election) to 16 May 1884, when he resigned.[2] He unsuccessfully contested the [1885 by-election](/source/1885_Wakanui_by-election) for [Wakanui](/source/Wakanui_(New_Zealand_electorate)). In the [1887 election](/source/1887_New_Zealand_general_election), he contested the [Avon](/source/Avon_(New_Zealand_electorate)) electorate, but was defeated by [Edwin Blake](/source/Edwin_Blake).[3]

He was successful again in the [1890 election](/source/1890_New_Zealand_general_election) in the Ashburton electorate. In the [1893 election](/source/1893_New_Zealand_general_election), he was defeated in the [Rangitata](/source/Rangitata_(New_Zealand_electorate)) electorate. He was once again successful in the [1896 election](/source/1896_New_Zealand_general_election) in the Ashburton electorate. He retired at the end of the parliamentary term in 1899.[2]

Wright was chairman of the [Lyttelton Harbour Board](/source/Lyttelton_Harbour_Board) for four periods.[1]

Wright died at his homestead Windermere, after which a [locality](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windermere,_New_Zealand&action=edit&redlink=1) between [Hinds](/source/Hinds%2C_New_Zealand) and [Winslow](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Winslow,_New_Zealand&action=edit&redlink=1) is named, on 12 August 1902.[1] He was survived by his wife and five children.[4] He was buried at Windermere Church.[5]
