**Edward Einhorn** (born September 6, 1970) is an American playwright, theater director, and novelist.

## Early life, education and career

A native of [Westfield, New Jersey](/source/Westfield%2C_New_Jersey), Einhorn graduated from [Westfield High School](/source/Westfield_High_School_(New_Jersey)), where he was an editor of the student newspaper *[Hi's Eye](/source/Hi's_Eye)*. He attended [Johns Hopkins University](/source/Johns_Hopkins_University), and he has a MA in Opera Writing from the [Guildhall School of Music and Drama](/source/Guildhall_School_of_Music_and_Drama). In 1992, he cofounded the Untitled Theater Company No. 61 in New York with his older brother, David. He curated the Ionesco Festival in 2001 ([Eugène Ionesco](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Ionesco)'s complete works) and the Havel Festival in 2006 ([Václav Havel](/source/V%C3%A1clav_Havel)'s complete works). He currently also serves as the artistic director of the Rehearsal for Truth International Theater Festival, honoring [Václav Havel](/source/V%C3%A1clav_Havel).[1]

## As a playwright

As a playwright, Einhorn became known for his absurd comic style. One of his best-known plays is *The Marriage of Alice B. Toklas by [Gertrude Stein](/source/Gertrude_Stein)*,[2] a farce set at a fantasy marriage between Stein and Toklas. The show received a Critic's Pick from Jesse Green, then co-chief reviewer of *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)* for its production at [HERE Arts](/source/HERE_Arts_Center). It was also produced [Off-West End](/source/Off_West_End) at the [Jermyn Street Theatre](/source/Jermyn_Street_Theatre).[3] at His other works include dramas on Jewish legends[4] and a series of plays on neurological and neuroscientific topics — *The Neurology of the Soul* (on [neuromarketing](/source/Neuromarketing)),[5] *The Boy Who Wanted to be a Robot* (on [Asperger syndrome](/source/Asperger_syndrome)), *The Taste of Blue*, (on [synesthesia](/source/Synesthesia)), *Strangers* (on [Korsakoff syndrome](/source/Korsakoff_syndrome)), and *Linguish* (on [aphasia](/source/Aphasia)). He adapted *[Lysistrata](/source/Lysistrata)* and *[Iphigenia in Aulis](/source/Iphigenia_in_Aulis)* for modern audiences.[6] In 2023, his play *The Shylock and the Shakespeareans*, a darkly humorous retelling of *[The Merchant of Venice](/source/The_Merchant_of_Venice)*, was produced at [The New Ohio Theatre](/source/New_Ohio_Theatre) and received a rave review from [Yair Rosenberg](/source/Yair_Rosenberg) in *[The Atlantic](/source/The_Atlantic)*.[7]

Adaptations include *[Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?](/source/Do_Androids_Dream_of_Electric_Sheep%3F)* by [Philip K. Dick](/source/Philip_K._Dick);[8]*[The Left Hand of Darkness](/source/The_Left_Hand_of_Darkness)*[9] and *[The Lathe of Heaven](/source/The_Lathe_of_Heaven)*, both by [Ursula Le Guin](/source/Ursula_Le_Guin); *[The Iron Heel](/source/The_Iron_Heel)*, by [Jack London](/source/Jack_London);[10] and [*City of Glass*](/source/City_of_Glass_(Paul_Auster_book)), by [Paul Auster](/source/Paul_Auster). He also translated and adapted [Václav Havel](/source/V%C3%A1clav_Havel)'s final play, *[The Pig, or Václav Havel's Hunt for a Pig](/source/The_Pig%2C_or_V%C3%A1clav_Havel's_Hunt_for_a_Pig)*,[11][12] as well as translating Havel's one-act, *[Ela, Hela, and the Hitch](/source/Ela%2C_Hela%2C_and_the_Hitch)*.[13] He also turned the existing fragments of *Exagoge* by [Ezekiel the Tragedian](/source/Ezekiel_the_Tragedian) into a play/opera/immersive Passover seder.[14]

## As a novelist

Einhorn has written two [Oz](/source/Land_of_Oz) novels, *[Paradox in Oz](/source/Paradox_in_Oz)*[15] and *The Living House of Oz,* both illustrated by [Eric Shanower](/source/Eric_Shanower).[16] He has written two picture books on mathematical subjects for young readers: *A Very Improbable Story*,[17] on the subject of [probability](/source/Probability), and *Fractions in Disguise*, on the subject of [fractions](/source/Fractions).[18] A number of his plays have also been published,[19] including a graphic novel adaptation of *Iphigenia in Aulis*, with art by [Eric Shanower](/source/Eric_Shanower), from [Image Comics](/source/Image_Comics).[20]

## Podcasts

In 2020, his podcast *The Resistible Rise of [J. R. Brinkley](/source/J._R._Brinkley)* was released, a four-part audio drama about the quack doctor turned politician, hosted by [Dan Butler](/source/Dan_Butler).[21]

In 2021, his podcast *[The Iron Heel](/source/The_Iron_Heel)* was released, a three-part audio drama adaptation of the book by [Jack London](/source/Jack_London).[22]

## As a theater director

While working with Untitled Theater Company No. 61, he directed [T. S. Eliot](/source/T._S._Eliot)'s *Sweeney Agonistes*, [Eugène Ionesco](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Ionesco)'s *[The Bald Soprano](/source/The_Bald_Soprano)*, and [Richard Foreman](/source/Richard_Foreman)'s *My Head Was a Sledgehammer*, among other works. [Off-Broadway](/source/Off-Broadway), he directed *Fairy Tales of the Absurd*, a trilogy of one-act plays, two by Ionesco and one (*One Head Too Many*) by himself.[23]

In 2014 and 2015, he created and directed the show *Money Lab*, an economic vaudeville, produced at [HERE Arts Center](/source/HERE_Arts_Center) in Manhattan and [The Brick](/source/The_Brick) in Brooklyn.[24][25]

In 2022, he directed a film of *The Last Cyclist* written in [Terezín](/source/Terez%C3%ADn) ([Theresienstadt Ghetto](/source/Theresienstadt_Ghetto)) by [Karel Švenk](/source/Karel_%C5%A0venk) and reconstructed by Naomi Patz, which was originally staged at [La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club](/source/La_MaMa_Experimental_Theatre_Club) and was broadcast on [WNET](/source/WNET) Channel 13, a [PBS](/source/PBS) affiliate, as part of Theater Close Up.[26][27]
