'''Edward Combes''' {{post-nominals|country=AUS|CMG}} (6 September 1830 – 18 October 1895) was an engineer, pastoralist, politician and painter. He was a member of the [New South Wales Legislative Assembly](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Assembly), and later the [New South Wales Legislative Council](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Council).<ref name=Mennell>{{cite Australasia|Combes, Hon. Combes entered the Government service of New South Wales in 1858. Four years later he was appointed Government Mining Engineer, and was returned to the Assembly as the member for [Bathurst](/source/Electoral_district_of_Bathurst) in 1872 and for [Orange](/source/Electoral_district_of_Orange) in 1875.<ref name="Edward Combes NSW parl"/> Combes was [Secretary for Public Works](/source/Secretary_for_Public_Works_(New_South_Wales)) in the [fourth Robertson ministry](/source/Robertson_ministry_(1877)) from August to December 1877, and in the following year was appointed Executive Commissioner for New South Wales at the [Paris International Exhibition](/source/Paris_International_Exhibition_of_1878), his seat in Parliament being declared vacant because that was held to be an office of profit under the Crown.<ref name=Mennell/><ref name="Combes ADB"/> He was re-elected to parliament as the [member for East Macquarie](/source/Electoral_district_of_East_Macquarie) in August 1879, holding the seat until 1885. He was made a [Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) (CMG) for his services at Paris,<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=24637 |pages=5774 |date=29 October 1878}}</ref> and an [officer of the Legion of Honour](/source/officer_of_the_Legion_of_Honour).<ref name=Mennell/> Combes, who married a daughter of the late William C. Hare, was a member of the Institution of French Civil Engineers, and an associate of the [Institution of Civil Engineers](/source/Institution_of_Civil_Engineers) of London. He was also an artist of considerable merit, and had exhibited with success at some of the leading London galleries.<ref name=Mennell/>
