**Edward Hastings Buckland** (20 June 1864 — 10 February 1906) was an English first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and educator.

The youngest son of The Reverend Matthew Buckland, he was born at [Laleham](/source/Laleham) in June 1864.[1] He was educated at [Marlborough College](/source/Marlborough_College),[2] where he gained a good reputation as a schoolboy cricketer.[3] From there, he matriculated to [New College, Oxford](/source/New_College,_Oxford), where he studied jurisprudence.[4] As a member of the [Oxford University Cricket Club](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) he made his debut in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for Oxford against [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Oxford](/source/University_Parks#Cricket_ground) in 1884. He played first-class cricket for the university until 1887, making 27 appearances.[5] Buckland was largely instrumental in Oxford's 1886 and 1887 victories over [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) in [The University Match](/source/The_University_Match_(cricket)).[3] Considered an [all-rounder](/source/All-rounder), he scored 739 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 17.18 for Oxford, with three half centuries and one [century](/source/Century_(cricket));[6] this century, a score of 148 came against [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club) in 1887, which helped Oxford to a victory over their county opponents.[3] As a bowler took 45 wickets Oxford at a [bowling average](/source/Bowling_average) of 20.88; he took three [five wicket hauls](/source/Five_wicket_haul), with best figures of 7 for 17.[7] His best bowling performance for Oxford arguably came against Cambridge in the 1886 University Match, taking 5 for 14 from 20.1 [overs](/source/Over_(cricket)).[3] At Oxford, Buckland also played first-class cricket for a number of other teams. In 1885, he played once for the MCC against [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_County_Cricket_Club) and played four times for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) in 1885 and once in 1887. He also toured North America with [Ned Sanders](/source/Ned_Sanders)' personal team, making two first-class appearances on the tour against the [Gentlemen of Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphian_cricket_team) in the winter of 1886.[5] The tour was a success for Buckland, with him taking 21 wickets at an average of 10.14.[7] In 1887, he played twice for the Gentlemen in the [Gentlemen v Players](/source/Gentlemen_v_Players) fixtures at [Lord's](/source/Lord's) and [The Oval](/source/The_Oval).[5]

After graduating from Oxford with a third-class degree, Buckland gained employment in an office in [London](/source/London) for a short time.[1] He continued to play first-class cricket after leaving Oxford. He played four further matches for Middlesex in 1888, bringing his total for the county to nine matches.[5] In these, he scored 254 runs and took 27 wickets at an average of 18.51.[6][7] In 1888, he also played for the [Gentlemen of England](/source/Gentlemen_of_England) and an [Oxford University Past and Present team](/source/Oxford_University_Past_and_Present_cricket_team) against the touring [Australians](/source/Australia_national_cricket_team), and for [Charles Thornton's](/source/Charles_Thornton_(cricketer)) personal team against Cambridge University.[5] It was in 1888 that he accepted the post of assistant-master at [Winchester College](/source/Winchester_College).[2] Before his appointment at Winchester, the college cricket team had performed badly and under Buckland's guidance, its performance greatly improved, with *[The Times](/source/The_Times)* suggesting he may have gained a reputation akin to [R. A. H. Mitchell](/source/Mike_Mitchell_(cricketer)) had it not been for his future ill-health.[1] Following the death of The Reverend C. H. Hawkins in 1900, Buckland succeeded him as a housemaster.[1] While teaching at Winchester, he played first-class cricket for [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [1895 County Championship](/source/1895_County_Championship), making four appearances in August.[5] These final matches took his total first-class appearances to 48. In these, he scored 1,414 runs at an average of 18.12, while as a bowler he took 110 wickets at a bowling average of 19.62, taking eight five wicket hauls and [ten-wickets in a match](/source/Ten-wicket_haul) once.[8] In his final years he suffered from a "long and most trying illness",[9] to which he succumbed to at [Winchester](/source/Winchester) in February 1906.[1] His brother, [Francis](/source/Francis_Buckland_(cricketer)), was also a first-class cricketer.
