# Edward Broad

**Edward William Broad** (30 April 1875 – 17 April 1913) was a New Zealand [cricketer](/source/Cricket). Broad's [batting](/source/Batting_(cricket)) style is unknown, though it is known he played as a [wicket-keeper](/source/Wicket-keeper). He was born at [Nelson, New Zealand](/source/Nelson,_New_Zealand).

Broad was educated at [Nelson College](/source/Nelson_College) from 1886 to 1892.[1] He made a single [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) appearance for [Nelson](/source/Nelson_cricket_team) against [Wellington](/source/Wellington_cricket_team) at [Trafalgar Park](/source/Trafalgar_Park,_Nelson) in December 1891.[2] Broad ended Nelson's first-innings of 106 all out [unbeaten](/source/Not_out) on 0, while in Wellington's first-innings of 128 all out he took three [catches](/source/Catch_(cricket)). In Nelson's second-innings of 111 all out, he scored 13 runs before he was dismissed by [William Ogier](/source/William_Ogier). In Wellington's one wicket victory, he also claimed a single catch in their second-innings chase.[3]

He was struck by a train while riding his motor cycle across a [level crossing](/source/Level_crossing) at [Marton](/source/Marton,_New_Zealand), [Manawatu](/source/Manawat%C5%AB-Whanganui), on 16 April 1913, and died of his injuries at Marton the next day.[4] He left a widow, four sons and a daughter.[5]
