# Edward Boddington

**Edward Robert Boddington** (29 April 1862 – 4 March 1897) was a [cricketer](/source/Cricketer) who played [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) in New Zealand from 1880 to 1888.

In the seven low-scoring first-class matches played at [Victory Square, Nelson](/source/Victory_Square,_Nelson#First-class_matches), Boddington hit the highest individual score, 36, for [Nelson](/source/Nelson_cricket_team) against [Wellington](/source/Wellington_cricket_team) in March 1886, when Nelson made only 101 yet won by an innings and 46 runs.[1]

Boddington was educated at [Nelson College](/source/Nelson_College) from 1877 to 1878,[2] and joined the [Union Bank of Australia](/source/Union_Bank_of_Australia), for whom he worked in [Nelson](/source/Nelson,_New_Zealand), [Wellington](/source/Wellington) and [Dunedin](/source/Dunedin) before moving to the [Perth](/source/Perth) branch in 1895.[3] He died suddenly in Perth, three months after winning the [Western Australian](/source/Western_Australia) tennis championship.[4] He was also a prominent golfer, cyclist and athlete.[5]
