'''Edward Avery''' (1851 – 1913) was an [English](/source/English_people) publisher of [pornography](/source/pornography).  His notable publications include ''[The Whippingham Papers](/source/The_Whippingham_Papers)'', including poems by [Algernon Charles Swinburne](/source/Algernon_Charles_Swinburne), and a pirated edition of Sir [Richard Burton](/source/Richard_Francis_Burton)'s ''[Kama Sutra](/source/Kama_Sutra)''.  He was an associate of [William Lazenby](/source/William_Lazenby) and [Leonard Smithers](/source/Leonard_Smithers).

After the [Post Office (Protection) Act 1884](/source/Post_Office_(Protection)_Act_1884), Avery together with other publishers such as [Charles Carrington](/source/Charles_Carrington), [William Lazenby](/source/William_Lazenby) and [Harry Sidney Nichols](/source/Harry_Sidney_Nichols) moved much of their business to [Paris](/source/Paris) to sell in the United Kingdom by mail order.

After evading prosecution successfully for many years he was finally arrested by [Chief Inspector](/source/Chief_Inspector) Edward Drew and convicted in 1900.  His stock was destroyed and he retired from business.
