Ash graduated from [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University) with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in 1866; this was automatically converted to a [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) in 1869.<ref name="venn"/> Before graduation, he had joined the staff of [Haileybury College](/source/Haileybury_and_Imperial_Service_College) as an assistant master in 1865, and he stayed there until he retired in 1902.<ref name="venn"/>
