# Edu Alonso

**Eduardo 'Edu' Alonso Álvarez** (born 30 May 1974) is a Spanish former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [right midfielder](/source/Midfielder#Wide_midfielder).

He spent the better part of his career with [Alavés](/source/Deportivo_Alav%C3%A9s) after starting out at [Athletic Bilbao](/source/Athletic_Bilbao), playing 180 competitive matches for the former club. Overall, he made more than 200 appearances in both [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) and the [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n).

## Club career

Born in [Bilbao](/source/Bilbao), [Basque Country](/source/Basque_Country_(autonomous_community)), Alonso was brought up at [Athletic Bilbao](/source/Athletic_Bilbao). He spent four full seasons in the [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) with their [B team](/source/Athletic_Bilbao_B), making his debut at the age of 18 in a 4–0 home win against [SD Eibar](/source/SD_Eibar) where he came on as a second-half [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)).[2]

Alonso was loaned to precisely Eibar for the [1996–97 campaign](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n), being recalled by his parent club shortly after. He first appeared in [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) on 17 November 1996, starting in a 4–2 away victory over [Sporting de Gijón](/source/Sporting_de_Gij%C3%B3n).[3]

After two years at [UD Salamanca](/source/UD_Salamanca) also in the top tier – where he notably scored a goal for the hosts in a 2–1 home defeat of Athletic[4] and another in a 1–1 draw with [FC Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) at the [Camp Nou](/source/Camp_Nou) the previous weekend[5]– Alonso returned to [San Mamés](/source/San_Mam%C3%A9s_Stadium_(1913)). He played 26 games in all competitions during [the season](/source/1999%E2%80%932000_La_Liga), under manager [Luis Fernández](/source/Luis_Fern%C3%A1ndez).

Following his release, Alonso represented fellow top-flight sides [UD Las Palmas](/source/UD_Las_Palmas) and [Deportivo Alavés](/source/Deportivo_Alav%C3%A9s), signing for the latter as a [free agent](/source/Free_agent) after leaving the [Canary Islands](/source/Canary_Islands) due to unpaid wages.[6][7] He made his debut in the [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Europa_League) on 31 October 2002 in a 1–1 home draw against [Beşiktaş J.K.](/source/Be%C5%9Fikta%C5%9F_J.K.) in the [second round](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_UEFA_Cup),[8] going on to be relegated twice during his spell.[9]

In September 2008, after recurring injury problems, the 34-year-old Alonso parted ways with Alavés by mutual consent and announced his retirement.[10][11]

## International career

Alonso earned two [caps](/source/Cap_(sport)) for the [Spain under-21s](/source/Spain_national_under-21_football_team).[12][13] Additionally, he represented the [Basque Country regional team](/source/Basque_Country_national_football_team).[14]
