He was the eldest son of [Sir John Ritchie Findlay, 1st Baronet](/source/Sir_John_Ritchie_Findlay%2C_1st_Baronet), and Dame [Harriet Findlay](/source/Harriet_Findlay) ([DBE](/source/Dame_Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire)) (born Harriet Jane Backhouse). He was educated at [Harrow School](/source/Harrow_School) and then attended university at [Balliol College, Oxford](/source/Balliol_College%2C_Oxford), graduating BA.

He married Margaret Jean Graham.

Like his father and grandfather, [John Ritchie Findlay](/source/John_Ritchie_Findlay), he was proprietor of ''[The Scotsman](/source/The_Scotsman)'' newspaper.

He succeeded his father to the baronetcy in 1930<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://thepeerage.com/p7112.htm#i71114 |title = Person Page}}</ref> and was in turn succeeded by his brother, Lt.-Col. Roland Lewis Findlay.

In 1932, he was elected a Fellow of the [Royal Society of Edinburgh](/source/Royal_Society_of_Edinburgh). He was [Unionist](/source/Unionist_Party_(Scotland)) [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) (MP) for [Banffshire](/source/Banffshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 1935 to 1945.

In 1953, he sold ''The Scotsman'' newspaper to [Roy Thomson, 1st Baron Thomson of Fleet](/source/Roy_Thomson%2C_1st_Baron_Thomson_of_Fleet), ending the long connection between the Findlay family and the newspaper.<ref>Confusion to Our Enemies, by Arnold Kemp</ref>
